How to Start an HTML5 Game Portal in 2026

A practical, step-by-step guide to launching an HTML5 game portal in 2026: picking a niche, sourcing games, SEO, monetization and growth.

We run four game portals ourselves: Cute Dressup, Play Cute Games, Best Game Spot and ColorifyMe. This is the playbook we would follow if we were starting a new one today.

1. Pick a niche you can own

General "free online games" portals compete with giants. A focused niche is easier to rank and easier to monetize:

  • Dress-up and fashion games for girls
  • Kids and educational games
  • Coloring and creative games
  • Puzzle and brain games for adults

Pick one where you can publish at least 50 good games and keep adding more every month.

2. Source games you control

You have two main options:

  1. Free embeds from distribution networks. They are fast to add, but you share revenue and your site looks like every other.
  2. Licensed games that you host yourself. You get full control, your branding, and 100% of the ad revenue.

Licensed, white-labeled games give you volume and your own identity at the same time. Our non-exclusive catalog exists for exactly this.

3. Build a fast site

Search engines and players both reward speed. In 2026 that means:

  • Server-rendered or static pages, not a heavy single-page app
  • Modern image formats (AVIF/WebP) and lazy-loaded game iframes
  • Core Web Vitals in the green: LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1

Load games only when the player clicks play. It is the single biggest speed win on a game page.

4. Structure for SEO

Each game page should have a unique title, a real description (not copied from the developer), screenshots, and structured data (VideoGame). Then build category hubs (Princess Games, Halloween Games) with genuine intro copy, because these pages often rank better than individual games.

Plan seasonal content early. Christmas games should be live by early November, before search demand peaks.

5. Monetize without hurting retention

  • Display ads around the game, not on top of it
  • Interstitial ad breaks between levels, not mid-level
  • Rewarded ads for hints or extra items. Players choose them, so they hurt retention least

6. Grow every month

  • Add fresh games on a schedule
  • Track which genres keep players longest, and buy more of those
  • Build backlinks from game developer, parenting or fashion blogs, depending on your niche
  • Localize your top games for your biggest non-English markets
